Energy Independence. More Choice. Less Waste.
Microgrids: Innovation at Every Level
A New Level of Energy Independence & Sustainability
What Is a Microgrid
The microgrid is a small-scale power supply network that is designed to provide power for a small community with a local power generation unit. A microgrid can connect and disconnect from the national grid. This enables it to operate in both connected or in island-mode, achieving complete energy independence.
Microgrids can have one or more power sources within them, which are usually relatively small in size. It can also have some means to store energy, such as batteries. The plants will serve nearby buildings by way of wires and pipes connecting them. The entire system communicates and operates by way of intelligent energy management systems.
Microgrids are often less polluting than grid power because a microgrid is usually fueled by renewable energy or combined heat and power (CHP). CHP is a highly efficient technology that reuses wasted heat created, transforming the wasted heat into usable energy for a building or factory in the microgrid. Using CHP can offer customers not only electricity, but also heat, steam and hot water.
Microgrids are also more efficient because their energy is created close to where it is used. The power does not have to travel miles and miles across large transmission lines.
