For the past six years, most U.S. states have seen a steady increase in electrical rates but Massachusetts is seeing the worst of it. With the second fastest increase in electrical rates in the U.S., second to Hawaii, both residential and commercial energy clients in Massachusetts are paying more than double what they were paying a few years ago.
Below, you can see a map charting which U.S. states have the highest electrical rates. Of all 50 states, Massachusetts has the 47th most expensive electrical rates.
While not all Massachusetts utilities have posted their winter rates, a report just issued by Energy Choice Maters announces National Grid’s rates that start on November 1st.

While Massachusetts has recently approved efforts to source it’s energy from renewable sources, it will be over a decade before these solutions go into full effect. Until then, 40% of Massachusetts’ energy is currently sources from Natural Gas pipelines. Cold winter months increase the demand for heating and electricity, which in turn put strain on existing natural gas pipelines and infrastructure,. To keep up with demand, utility companies must purchase large quantities of electricity and storage it for the winter months, creating those price increases. Thanks to Massachusetts energy laws, Massachusetts residence can choose their energy supplier and that’s how businesses and even residential clients can protect themselves.
Energy Procurement refers to the identification and sourcing of Natural Gas and Electricity contracts that best suit your individual business needs and budget.
