What Is Energy Deregulation?

Your electricity bills consume a large portion of your business’ operating expenses! But since you can’t really run your business without electricity, what can you do about it?

There are several things you can do to reduce your energy costs by using electricity more efficiently, but one of the fastest ways to pay less for electricity is to find lower electricity rates! As a business owner, and even a homeowner, you can choose where to get your electricity and natural gas from, and so shop around for better prices! Unfortunately, not every state has this program yet. States that qualify for the energy choice program are called deregulated states.

Energy deregulation is essentially the restructuring of existing energy markets allowing retail energy suppliers (REPs) to buy and sell electricity and natural gas to you (customers). States that passed energy deregulation laws did so to prevent a monopoly and increasing competition. You benefit from this because you now have energy suppliers competing for your business, which in turn gives you the chance to find lower energy rates!

At the bottom of this blog, we’ve included a list of which states qualify for the energy choice program. Apart from a few specific co-ops or zones within these states, if you have a business in one of the listed states you can reduce your energy costs by looking for lower electricity and natural gas prices.

So How Does Energy Deregulation Work?

How energy deregulation works

The energy deregulation process works by reverse auction. In traditional auctions you have one seller, selling something, and many buyers competing to buy that one item, offering higher and higher prices until someone wins the auction. A reverse auction is exactly the opposite.

You the energy consumer is looking to buy energy at better rates and there are many sellers (retail energy suppliers) who want to compete for your business. This allows you to find the lowest energy pricing available and lock that pricing in the long term.

This is where we, Energy Professionals, comes in.
